FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2009

The 47th Nordic World Ski Championships was held from 18 February to 1 March 2009 in the Czech town of Liberec instead. This was decided on 3 June 2004 during the FIS Congress in Miami (USA). Liberec sat down in a crucial vote with 11:4 votes against the Norwegian capital Oslo by.

This was the second time a Czech city hosted the Nordic World Ski Championships. In the Nordic World Ski Championships 1925, the competitions were organized in Jánské Lázně.

At the 2009 World Championships Women's competitions were first held in ski jumping and a mass start competition, the combiner.

Competitions

In cross-country skiing were held single and two team events for men and women four. The discharged as double tracking Pursuit (15 km women, 30 km men) and the squadrons were gone part distances in both classic and free technique. In the Nordic Combined carried out for the World Cup reforms of the discipline were also used in the World Championships. Instead of the previously usual Individual and Sprint competitions individual events, each with only a jump of large and normal hill and the following 10 km cross-country now took place. In addition, a mass start competition was held at the World Cup for the first time. This competition variant was abolished by the reform indeed, but the race remained in the World Cup program, as he was already terminated. For future World Championships, this competition is no longer occurring. In addition, a team competition was held.

In ski jumping for the first time a world champion was determined after women had previously participated in the Junior World Championships since 2006. The competition was held on the normal hill. On the men's individual competition of normal and large hill and a team competition on the large hill took place.

Participant

Including spare people who participated only at the training passages, 589 athletes from 61 countries were registered for the World Championships. Ultimately, participated in the competitions 549 athletes from 61 countries participated.

Venues

The cross-country competitions were in the south of Liberec, held in the district Vesec. There is a ski area was created specially for the World Championships. This was not completed until shortly before the World Cup, in previously discharged there test competitions had to be resorted to temporary routes. In the complex there is a ski stadium, which can hold 30,000 people. There are two routes for the Sprint competitions, with lengths of 1.2 and 1.5 kilometers. There are also two 3.75 km long distances, both of which can be reduced to 3.3 and 2.5 kilometers. By combining these routes that converge at the stadium, all necessary distances can be realized.

The jump competitions were held on the ski jumps at Ještěd. These already exist since 1966 and were repeatedly venue for World Cup competitions. For the World Cup infrastructure in the environment of the hills was extensively rebuilt and modernized. So a five million euro expensive multi-purpose building was constructed in the outlet, expanded the grandstand installations and installed a powerful floodlights. The jumps were equipped with mats for summer training, hill profiles were thereby not changed. Had the large hill to the World Cup a hill size of 134 meters and a construction point of 120 meters. The official hill record held the Finn Janne Ahonen with 139.0 meters, situated at the World Cup in 2004, the unofficial record kept of the Czech Roman Koudelka 143.0 meters, situated at the Czech Championships 2008. Normal Hill had a hill size of 100 meters and a costing point of 90 meters. An official hill record existed before the World Cup on the normal hill not because there the last World Cup competition was held in 1994 and thus before the introduction of the system of official hill records. The unofficial hill record held before the World Cup Austrian Thomas Egger Riedmüller, situated in the Alpine Cup 2009. During the World Cup the Finn Harri Olli presented with 104.5 meters, an official hill record. The jump of his compatriot Anssi Koivuranta to 106.5 meters mass start competition in nordic combined was seen only as an unofficial record because it was standing in a broken, unscored passage. The ladies record on the hill held together Ulrike Gräßler and Nata De Leeuw 103.5 meters, situated at the WM test competitions in October 2008.

In addition, the Tipsport Arena, a multi -purpose arena for the opening ceremony was used. It also served during the World Cup as an office of the organizing committee and as a press center.

The market square in the center of Liberec was used as a Medal Plaza. While following the event, the winners were honored only in the context of a flower ceremony, the actual ceremony took place there every night, in conjunction with concerts and fireworks.
