Laces (Italian Laces ) is a market town with 5162 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the central Vinschgau in South Tyrol (Italy).

Geography

The village dwarf is crossed by the Adige. In the south, the Ortler Alps collect, north of the Ötztal Alps. The Stelvio National Park is a part of the municipality, the city of Merano is 25 km away.

The highest point is 3257 m with the Hasenohrl, which is partially glaciated.

Due to its location between two inner alpine high mountain ranges falling into Laces with about 500 mm per year (compared to Innsbruck: 900 mm) relatively little rainfall. Therefore, it is one of the places with the most sunshine hours throughout the Alps.

The main town is located entirely in the valley floor, as are the fractions Gold Rain and Morter, the fraction Tarsch however, spreads out on a Murkegel overlooking the resort. Highest settlement point is the fraction St. Martin can be reached in Kofel at an altitude of 1740 m, via the funicular St. Martin.

Attractions

In Laces are several historical castles, the ruins Obermontani and Untermontani in the district Morter, castle Annenberg above the hamlet Tiss or the castle dwarf in the center. Particularly interesting are the winged altar by Jörg Lederer in the hospital church and the chapel of St. Stefan in the fraction Morter that the nickname Sistine Chapel of South Tyrol bears for their wall paintings and is one of the most remarkable chapels in the country.

Also worth seeing is the Built at 950 meters above sea level on an earlier source sanctuary above the fraction Tarsch Romanesque St. Medard Church (11th or the 12th century ) with arched friezes and coupled arched windows on the tower and wall paintings inside from the 13th to 15th century. (including crucifixion group, meandering, tendril ornament, various figural scenes). The church belonged to a no longer extant pilgrim hospice at the transition by Ultimo.

The Gold Rain Castle is educational and cultural center of the entire valley. It received its present shape in several stages from about 1475; Builder was the Engadine noble family von Ardez check ( check v. Gold Rain). Through inheritance, the castle passed to the originating from North Tyrol later Count chicken which extensions it further. Worth seeing, especially the rectangular enclosure, various portals and stairways and the Loggiengalerie. All major pieces are made of white marble.

Also worth mentioning is the 5,000 -year-old Statuenmenhir of Laces, which was found in 1992 in the Unterbichl church near the entrance.

Economy and infrastructure

Main economic factor is next to the fruit-growing tourism with more than 55,000 guest arrivals.

Ski resort

The ski mountain pine - Tarscheralm - Member of the Ortler Ski Arena - extends from the base station in 1250 m to 2250 m on the Nördersberg, has two lifts and 11 km alpine slopes to offer, as well as a natural toboggan run.

Sports

Laces is a venue in the natural track luge World Cup and was also the host of the natural track luge World Cup 2005
