Monteroni di Lecce

Monteroni di Lecce ( in the Apulian dialect Muntrùni ) is a Southern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 13,981 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) in the province of Lecce in Puglia. The place is surrounded by the Salento about 7.5 kilometers west of Lecce. The town's name derives from the toponym Mons Tyronum from (Mount of spearmen ).

History

In the mountains, which are now called San Filii, the Romans built a military camp. During the reign of the Normans Monteroni belonged as a fief to Count of Lecce. From 1250 there was the family De Cremona, later the family Montoroni. With the 16-17. Century was the place fief of the Duke of Spongano. Is the so-called Ecotekne campus of the Università del Salento in resort.
