Motta d'Affermo

Motta d' Affermo is a city in the province of Messina in the Italian region Sicily, with 805 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Motta d' Affermo is located 148 km west of Messina and 99 kilometers east of Palermo. The inhabitants mainly work in agriculture and forestry. The nearest motorway junction is Tusa on the A20 (Italy) and is 13 km from Motta d' Affermo away.

Among the districts Torremuzza heard. The neighboring municipalities are Pettineo, Reitano and Tusa.

History

First inhabited the place was in the post-Roman and Byzantine period around the 8th century. The place was called at that time Motta di Sparto (after Oberto de Sparto to 1266 ) and Motta dei Punici. Motta stands in the language of the Phoenicians for fortress. As of 1270 stood under the place Hugues de Brusa, a French mercenary, from 1272 Dreuv de Lazabard. From 1296 to 1344 the Chiaramonte family ruled. From 1380 to 1452 was called the town Motta de Fermo (after Muccio di Fermo). The name comes from the family of today Affermo ( Muzio and Mario D' Affermo ) and originated in the 15th century, when this the place of the Ventimiglia took over. 1557 was the fief to Bonajuto Vincenzo ( Vincenzo also Bonajuto ) 1607 in Modesto Gambacurta, because of Filippo III was employed by the Marchese. Gregorio Castelli bought the fief in 1633, from then on it remained for the next two centuries in the possession of the family. After 1812, the feudal system was abolished, the municipality of Motta d' Affermo arose. 1844 the place changed from the Diocese of Cefalù to the diocese of Patti. The number of inhabitants decreased continuously through emigration since 1881. The village had 1881 inhabitants in 2448 still, at present there are only 859

Attractions

  • Castello, built around 1260 castle, which was expanded in 1380.
  • Holy Mary of the Angels, Mother Church, built 1380 church which was expanded in 1647. 1706, the Chapel of the Crucifix was inaugurated, in 1712 the presbytery.
  • Chiesa di San Luca, in 1538 created and named after the patron saint of the church.
  • Chiesa di San Rocco, after the patron saint named church from the year 1657th The main gate is from the year 1697, transept and dome 1712 bis 1716. Facade and campanile were completed in 1776.
