Pantepec is a municipality in the northwest of the Mexican state of Chiapas. The municipality is located in the Sierra Madre de Chiapas. The name comes from the Nahuatl and means " Mounted on a mountain ."

The municipality has about 11,000 inhabitants and an area of 106 km ². Administrative seat and largest town of the Municipalities is the same Pantepec.

The municipality borders the Municipalities Pantepec Chapultenango, Ixhuatán, Tapilula, Rayón, Jitotol, Bochil, Coapilla and Tapalapa.
