Pavlohrad

Pawlohrad (Ukrainian Павлоград; Russian Павлоград / Pavlograd ) is a city in the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast in central Ukraine. Pawlohrad is the center of Rajons same and has about 107,000 inhabitants ( 2012). The city lies between two rivers: Samara and Wowtscha. The Oblastzentrum Dnipropetrovsk is situated 75 km west of the city.

History

1779 a small fort was established in place of the city. 1784 Pawlohrad received city rights. In the 19th century the city was the administrative center of Ujesd Pawlohrad Governorate Jekaterinoslaw. Since the end of the 19th century, the city was an important center of trade in cereals. Pawlohrad was occupied in October 1941 by the Wehrmacht. After an uprising in February 1943, the town was freed but recaptured after five days. Pawlohrad was finally liberated on 18 September 1943. During the war the town was destroyed 3/4. After the rapid reconstruction of the city has become an important industrial center (Mechanical Engineering).
