The Elbe Sandstone Mountains ( Czech Labské pískovce or Labské pískovcové Pohoří ) is constructed mainly of sandstone mountain range on the upper reaches of the River Elbe in Saxony ( Germany ) and North Bohemia (Czech Republic). It is about 700 square kilometers and reaches heights up to 723 meters above sea level. The German part is generally referred to as Saxon Switzerland, the Czech and Bohemian Switzerland ( České Švýcarsko ). The now more commonly used term " Bohemian-Saxon Switzerland " ( Ceskosaske Švýcarsko ) is derived from it.
Geography
The central waters of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains is the Elbe. The mountain range stretches the left and right of the river between the Saxon town of Pirna and the Czech town of Decin. The highest elevation of the Elbe sandstone is lying on the Czech side High Schneeberg. On the German side the Great Zschirnstein is the highest mountain.

Cotta is a municipality in the district of Dohma Saxon Switzerland & Eastern Ore Mountains, Saxony. It lies at the foot of Mount Cottaer Spitz and divided into large Cotta (also: Cotta A) and small Cotta (also: Cotta B). Cotta is the namesake of the Cottaer sandstone, among other things, a mined there Elbsandsteinsorte.
Scenic Cotta is on the western edge of Saxon Switzerland. Just south of the local situation rises the Cottaer Spitzberg, a 390.8 -meter-high, existing basalt Härtling, which are a protected area of natural monument since 1979 because of its geological and botanical features. The tip of this highly visible landmark is more than 70 meters above the town. Cotta in turn is located on the Cottaer flatness, a plateau between the valleys of the stretcher in the west, and the God Leuba in the east.

Traffic
The Elbe Sandstone Mountains run through several narrow-gauge railway lines. Even in earlier times led important post roads through the Saxon and Bohemian Switzerland. Today, the Federal Highway 17 is an important link road between Germany and the Czech Republic.
