Construction

Psalm 119 has a special design that sets it apart already in structure from others: The psalm is divided into 22 sections, corresponding to the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet. The sections are numbered according to the Hebrew alphabet; in each section of each of the eight verses begins in the original Hebrew text with the same letter (so-called ABeCeDarius ). Since a translation would not be reasonably possible into German while maintaining this peculiarity, the Hebrew alphabet in German texts is typically represented as section headings: Aleph, Bet, Gimel, ...

Content

The psalm is marked by trust in God's word. Many verses are about how the Divine Word makes, converting alive; in each verse (up to verse 122) is accordingly also a synonym for this Divine Word before " law of the Lord ", " his rules ", " your laws." The original Hebrew uses ten different words for the "law", which perhaps appropriate only eight words were used in the original text, but in each of the verses.
