Psalm 84

The 84th Psalm ( Greek- count 83 ) is a Psalm of Korah and is in the series of hymns or more specifically the songs of Zion to classify.

Genus

Hermann Gunkel classified the psalm into the ranks of the songs of Zion. Songs of Zion are in nature an anthem especially praises his sanctuary next to God and immediately use with this praise - without opening words. Instead of an introduction can be found in this psalm a rhetorical question from the main piece of the anthem. Moreover, often, as in verse 12, YHWH the subject.

The Psalm can be broken down as follows:

  • Verse 5-8: Blessing
  • Verse 9-10: Please
  • Verse 11: Confession
  • Verse 12f. Worship YHWH

Use

Matthias Jorissen has 1798 retightened the Psalm for the Geneva Psalter, "How beautiful beautiful, O Lord of hosts, is your dwelling, O my God " (EC 282).

Johannes Brahms used the verses two, three and five in the fourth set of his German Requiem "How amiable are thy tabernacles, O Lord of hosts ."
