Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Pontianak

The Archdiocese of Pontianak (Latin Archidioecesis Pontianakensis ) is a Roman Catholic archdiocese based in Pontianak in Indonesia.

History

Pope Innocent XII. tried to establish the Apostolic Vicariate of Borneo on January 16, 1692. The mission was unsuccessful because the Sultan of Banjarmasin all foreigners forbade the advance inland. Pius X founded the Apostolic Prefecture of Dutch Borneo on February 11, 1905 from annexations of the Apostolic Prefecture of Batavia.

With the Apostolic Constitution Quae catholico nomini it was raised on 13 March 1918 Apostolic Vicariate and took on 21 May 1938, names, Apostolic Vicariate of Pontianak on. On January 3, 1961, was raised to the rank of Metropolitanerzbistums.

Parts of its territory it lost in favor of the establishment of the following dioceses:

  • May 21, 1938 at the Apostolic Prefecture Banjarmasin;
  • March 11, 1948 at the Apostolic Prefecture Sintang;
  • June 14, 1954 at the Apostolic Prefecture Ketapang;
  • April 9, 1968 at the Apostolic Prefecture Sekadau.
