Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Jakarta

The Archdiocese of Jakarta (Latin Archidioecesis Giakartanus ) is a Roman Catholic archdiocese headquartered in Jakarta, Indonesia.

History

In 1807 the King of Holland, Louis Bonaparte and Pope Pius VII shared the Dutch colonies in three ecclesiastical territories, including two in the Caribbean and the third in the East Indies with headquarters in Batavia. The following year, the first Prefect Apostolic was appointed, but the Apostolic Prefecture of Batavia was de facto established only in 1826 from annexations of the Apostolic Prefecture of Bourbon.

On April 3, 1841 Prefecture Apostolic was raised to a Vicariate Apostolic. On February 7, 1950, took the name Apostolic Vicariate of Djakarta. On January 3, 1961, was raised to the rank of Metropolitanerzbistums.

Parts of its territory it lost in favor of the establishment of the following dioceses:

  • September 4, 1855 at the Prefecture Apostolic of Labuan and Borneo;
  • February 11, 1905 at the Apostolic Prefecture of Dutch Borneo;
  • June 30, 1911 at the Apostolic Prefecture of Sumatra;
  • September 16, 1913 at the Apostolic Prefecture Small Sunda Islands;
  • November 19, 1919 at the Apostolic Prefecture of Celebes;
  • April 27, 1927 at the Prefecture Apostolic of Malang;
  • February 15, 1928 at the Apostolic Prefecture Surabaia;
  • April 20, 1932 at the Prefecture Apostolic of Bandung;
  • April 25, 1932 at the Prefecture Apostolic of Purwokerto;
  • June 25, 1940 at the Apostolic Vicariate of Semarang;
  • December 9, 1948 at the Apostolic Prefecture of Sukabumi.
