Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Palembang

The Archdiocese of Palembang (Latin Archidioecesis palembangensis ) is a Roman Catholic archdiocese based in Palembang in Indonesia. It includes the provinces of Jambi, Bengkulu, Lampung, Riau, Bangka Belitung, and South Sumatra.

History

Pope Pius XI. founded the Apostolic Prefecture Benkoelen on December 27, 1923 annexations of the Apostolic Prefecture of Sumatra. With the Apostolic Constitution Apostolic was raised on June 13, 1939 and took the name Vicariate Apostolic, Apostolic Vicariate of Palembang, on.

On 19 June 1952, lost part of its territory in favor of the establishment of the Apostolic Prefectures Padang and Tandjung - Karang. On January 3, 1961, she was elevated to the bishopric, which was the Archdiocese of Medan is a suffragan. On 1 July 2003 it was raised to the rank of Metropolitanerzbistums.
