Roman Catholic Diocese of Jayapura

The Diocese of Jayapura (Latin: Dioecesis Iayapuraensis ) is located in Indonesia Roman Catholic diocese based in Jayapura.

History

The Diocese of Jayapura was born on May 12, 1949 by Pope Pius XII. with the Apostolic Constitution Melius aptiusque of annexations of the Apostolic Vicariate of Dutch New Guinea established as Apostolic Prefecture of Hollandia. On June 14, 1954, the Apostolic Prefecture of Hollandia was Pius XII. charged with the Apostolic Constitution Ecclesiae Fastos Apostolic Vicariate. The Apostolic Vicariate of Hollandia was on December 19, 1959 from parts of its territory establishing the Apostolic Prefecture of Manokwari. On June 28, 1963, the Vicariate Apostolic of Hollandia was renamed Kota Baru Apostolic Vicariate. The Apostolic Vicariate of Kota Baru was renamed on June 12, 1964 in Apostolic Vicariate Sukarnapura.

On November 15, 1966, the Apostolic Vicariate Sukarnapura was by Pope Paul VI. charged with the Apostolic Constitution Pro suscepto to the diocese and the Archdiocese of Merauke is a suffragan. The diocese Sukarnapura was renamed on 25 April 1969 in the diocese of Djajapura. On August 22, 1973, the diocese was renamed the Diocese of Jayapura Djajapura. The Diocese of Jayapura announced on December 19, 2003 from parts of its territory to the founding of the Diocese of Timika.
