Shire of Towong

The seat of the City Council is located in Tallangatta on the northern border of New South Wales on Lake Hume.

Towong Shire is sparsely populated and Corryong and Tallangatta are the only two major towns with a population of about 1200 and 900, respectively, with Tallangatta was rebuilt only in the 1950s after the original site had been sacrificed to the Hume Reservoir. Many smaller villages emerged as mining and gold mining settlements in the mountainous region of the Shires in the 19th century. Many residents work as commuters in the urban area Wodonga Albury.
