Temse (French: Tamise ) is a Belgian municipality with 28 889 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2012 ), located in the province of East Flanders in the Arrondissement Sint -Niklaas.

Located on the Scheldt community was known by the bridge of Belgium and the former Boel - yard longest at 365 meters.

In 1977, the towns Steendorp, Tielrode and Elversele were incorporated.

The name may derive from Temse Gallo-Roman Tamasiacum, the Romans called the settlement on the banks of the Scheldt Tempseca. Furthermore, they may include the Indo - old European or Latin roots: Tam .. stood for " dark ...", and " Amisia " is Roman name for the river Ems in Germany. Not further is amazing then the linguistic similarity to the English River Thames, in the 2nd century BC, the term Tamesis was in many places synonymous with running water.

The patron saint of Temse is Santa Amelberga which founded around the year 770, the first parish, one of the oldest parishes in the Waasland.

Since 1975 there has been twinned with Eupen.
