Vaulion

Vaulion is a municipality in the district of Jura-Nord Vaudois in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland.

Geography

Vaulion is located on 932 m above sea level. M., 12 km west-southwest of Orbe and 22 km west-southwest of the district capital Yverdon- les- Bains ( straight line ). The village street lines extending in a basin at the headwaters of the Nozon, in the Vaud Jura at the eastern foot of the Dent de Vaulion.

The area of ​​13.2 km ² large municipality area includes a portion of the Vaud Jura in the headwaters of Nozon. The western boundary runs along the chain of the Dent de Vaulion that with 1'483 m above sea level. M. is the highest point of Vaulion. Adjoining to the east of the syncline, which lies between the Dent de Vaulion and the side chain of Mollendruz. Population

With 459 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Vaulion is one of the small communities of the Canton of Vaud. Of the 92.7 % inhabitants are French-speaking, German-speaking 3.7 % and 1.4 % portugiesischsprachig (as of 2000). The population of Vaulion amounted in 1803 to 1145 inhabitants in 1850 to 994 inhabitants and 1920 to 1051 inhabitants. After a decrease to 358 inhabitants was recorded due to high levels of emigration until 1980, since then the population has increased slightly again.

Economy

Originally dominated by agriculture village focused early on the craft and industrial activity. Since the end of the 16th century, the weaving and shoe-making developed in the following century. Traffic

Vaulion is on the main road from Orbe via Romainmôtier -Envy and over the pass Petra Felix in the Vallée de Joux. By Postbus course, which runs on Croy and partly to Orbe, Vaulion is connected to the network of public transport.

History

The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1097 under the name Vallis Leonis. In the period following the terms Valleuni ( 1160 ), and in 1316 the present name Vaullyon Vaulion published. This derives from Val du Lion from, because Le Lion was the former name of the river Nozon. Probably Vaulion was founded in the 11th century who fled from France serfs. Attractions

The present building of the Reformed parish church dates from 1756th It was built on the site of an earlier church. The rectory was built in 1745. In the center some characteristic farmhouses from the 18th and 19th centuries have been preserved.
