1983 Copa América

The Copa América 1983 was the 32nd playout of the South American continental championship in football and was held from August 10 to November 4.

The competition format was the same as in 1975 and 1979. There was again no tournament in league system in a country, as in the past, but it was played in a combination of group stage and knockout system with return game. The preliminary round consisted of three groups of three participants. The three group winners reached the semi-finals, while defending champion Paraguay was automatically qualified for the semifinals. In case of equal goal difference decided this was the same lot. In the final, a playoff would have been played on neutral ground in a tie after return game, but this time was not necessary. For the sixth time in the competition's history a number of audience of over one million was achieved, but without breaking the record of 1945.

Titelverdeidiger Paraguay failed in the semifinals to Brazil. Uruguay secured his twelfth overall title and moved so that the same with the previous record holder Argentina.
