Aurel (Vaucluse)

Aurel is a commune with 182 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Vaucluse and the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.

Geography

Aurel is located in the northeast of the department of Vaucluse, right on the border of the Drôme département. Surrounding communities are Saint- Trinit, Sault, Brantes and Savoillan in Vaucluse, and Reilhanette, Montbrun- les- Bains and Ferrassières in Drôme. Nearest large towns are apt in the south ( 28 km) and Carpentras in the west ( 32 km).

The municipality is located on the Plateau d' Albion east of Mont Ventoux at an altitude 615-1600 meters. Southwest of the community center is the source of Nesque.

Traffic

The route Departmental D942 runs on a north-south axis of Sault coming towards the Drome region. The western municipality is stripped from the D164, which leads to Mont Ventoux.

History

The town was founded in the 11th century by the Knights of St. John, who built a hospice here. Aurel is first mentioned in 1178 as Castrum Aurelii documented.

End of the 16th century, Aurel was conquered by the Baron de Vins, who allied himself with the Earl of Sault.

Attractions

Aurel is a lonely rock village on the slopes of Mont Ventoux. The center is formed by the church and the remains of a hospice in order to group the robust cottage. The church dates from the 12th century and is dedicated to Sainte Aurèle. The hospice also dates from the 12th century and is privately owned.

Tourism

Through the community of the 29 km long distance hiking trail GR 91C runs. The road D942 is part of the tourist route Routes de la Lavande.
