Loriol-du-Comtat

Loriol -du -Comtat is a commune with 2422 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Vaucluse department in the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur; it belongs to the administrative district in the canton of Carpentras Carpentras -Nord.

The municipality is situated approximately 20 kilometers north-east of Avignon. Neighboring municipalities are:

The municipality is crossed by the river Mède which receives its tributary Brégoux in the southwest corner of the municipality. In the far east and the irrigation channel Canal de Carpentras uses on a few hundred meters in length the municipality, but is supplied right here has a significant Aqueduct ( aqueduc des Cinq -Cantons ) with water.

History

Just before dawn the Gallo -Roman period, the area was inhabited by the tribe of the keltoligurischen Memini. The Romans expelled the natives and settled in the country until the 4th century AD ever.

After the disintegration of the empire of Charlemagne Loriol was successively managed by the Counts of Provence, Count of Toulouse and finally Barral from the house of Baux.

Beginning of the 14th century sold Aimard de Poitiers its castle and manor of Guilhem de Clermont, a nephew of Pope Clement V. The feud remained until 1363 owned by the family Clermont- Lodève which passed it by marriage to the family of Astorg de Peyre. After the Hundred Years War, the area of ​​marauding mercenaries was haunted. The residents left the village and sought refuge in the safe town of Carpentras.

After a slow recolonization of the fief in 1772 divided into four co-owners. 1830 Loriol counted 452 inhabitants, of whom only one-tenth were born outside of the village. In 1918 it was renamed Loriol -du -Comtat, to distinguish the community from the same Loriol in the Drome.

Place name

The place name has evolved from the Latin Auriolus or Aureolus, which means means " gold ". In Occitan is denoted by auriol also the yellow -colored oriole ( Oriolus oriolus, loriot in French).
