Crillon-le-Brave

Crillon- le -Brave is a commune with 443 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the Vaucluse department in the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.

Geography

The village is a surrounded by orchards and fields Perché Village at the foot of Mont Ventoux, about ten kilometers north-east of Carpentras. Through the southwestern part of the village flows the Mède (also called Vallon des Paillasses called ), which rises on the slopes of Mont Ventoux and after 34.8 kilometers, flows into the Sorgue. Neighboring municipalities are Modène in the West, Saint- Pierre -de- Vassols in the south, the east and Bédoin Malaucène in the north.

History

The Kavaren established a first settlement which the Greeks extensions to a commercial establishment called Akradouleion. The following Romans christened the place Crillonium or Credullion what " rocky place " means.

The earliest mention of the name form Crillon dates back to 1157.

During the Avignon papacy Crillon was a fief and was subordinate to the head of the Apostolic Chamber. 1408 Crillon was, although under the protection of the papal army of Benedict XIII. standing, occupied by Captain Tailulo.

The addition le Brave ( " the Brave " ) was added in memory of Louis Seigneur Des Balbes de Berton de Crillon in the 19th century. Louis, called "the brave Crillon ", was born in 1543 in nearby Murs and served as commander of the French army under Henry IV

  • The chapel of Saint- Michel ( 12th century ) has remains of frescoes from the 12th to the 14th century. Although unfortunately very damaged, a Christ, multiple angels, an ox, a lion, the Last Supper and St. Michael are still recognizable as motifs. The chapel has been classified since February 23, 2011 as a historic monument ( Monument historique ).
  • The Castle of Crillon is located in a rare manner below the village. The two towers are probably from the 15th century. The building appears to have been rebuilt in the 19th century. In the 1990s it was sold to a private owner, restored and converted into a hotel.
  • The parish church of Saint- Romain in Romanesque style consists of a vierjochigen nave. Inside is an altar-piece by Jacques Bernus and an epitaph of Louis Crillon with the inscription: Henri IV l' aima, les pauvres le pleurèrent ( " Henry IV loved him, the poor grieved for him "). She fell in the 19th century a new victim.
  • The chapel Notre- Dame-des- Accès was built in 1721 in honor of St Roch. The roof ridge is wearing a bell tower with a wrought iron cross.
  • The bronzerne statue of the " brave Crillon ", created in 1858 by Louis Veray, originally stood on the Place de l' Horloge in Avignon, and later in 1891 before the Pope's Palace. It was confiscated by German troops in 1942 and re-erected after the war ended at the same place. After repair work, they came to the village square of Crillon.
  • The Porte Gérin (17th century), one of two gates of the medieval village wall is guarded by a statue of the Virgin.
