Malemort-du-Comtat

Malemort -du -Comtat is a commune with 1558 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Vaucluse department in the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.

Geography

Malemort -du -Comtat is located at the western exit of the Gorges de la Nesque, between Carpentras and the Monts de Vaucluse. The Nesque forms part of the southern boundary of the municipality. Surrounding municipalities are Venasque in the southwest, Méthamis the southeast, Blauvac in the east and in the north of Mazan.

History

Traces of occupation of the site extend to 5000 BC to the Neolithic age. From the grounds of the castle Unang come numerous finds from the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Roman times. The castle got its name from a Gallo-Roman villa called Villa Unango that once was here.

During the migration period an important battle decimated the native population. A few decades later, at 875, Karl, King gave away of Provence- Viennois, the villa Unango together with outbuildings, lands and vineyards to John, the bishop of Carpentras.

1160 the village was mentioned a next time. Raymond V, Count of Toulouse, Margrave of Provence, sold the Castle of Venasque, at the times Mort and Villa San Felice ( Castle of Saint- Félix ) were connected in 2000 Sou Bishop Raimond I.

1348 was a large part of the population of the Great Plague. In the late 14th century the village was fortified by a wall flanked with eleven towers. She was accessed through three doors, which are still preserved.

1720, the community was ravaged by a plague epidemic further. To a wall, the plague was kept away from the other inhabitants being built right through the village, which ran along the present Rue l' Endroune. Some remains of the wall are still visible today.

1791 Malemort -du -Comtat became affiliated with the Comtat venaissin to France.

  • Castle Saint- Félix, former summer residence of the Bishops of Carpentras Provence and birthplace of the poet Félix Gras ( 1844-1901 ).
  • Fountain at the Grand Porte ( City Gate) from 1789, Monument historique since October 28, 1949.
  • More wells and Lavoirs in the village and surrounding area.
  • Prärömischer altar, found in St. Antonin, parts are exhibited in the Mairie.
  • In the church there are several objects of the former chapel of Sainte -garde, including an altar, a statue group with Joseph and Mary, and a group with four gilded wooden figures, the Ste. Elisabeth, Ste. Anne, St. Joachim and St. Zacharie represent. All six statues are Jacques Bernus attributed and dated before his death in 1728. Objects are 1933 cultural property protected since 3 May. Was filed on the same day under protection a relic of glass and gilded copper in 1786, the associated relics box is decorated with the arms of her donor Beni Bischof.
