Monteux

Monteux is a commune with 11,122 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Vaucluse and the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.

Location

Monteux is located four kilometers from Carpentras in the heart of the Comtat venaissin twenty kilometers northeast of Avignon. The city is located in the plains southwest of Mont Ventoux, east of the Rhone River and north of the Durance.

History

On the find site Bellegarde an urn grave, shards of a balm bottle, a clay lamp, a plate and a bowl of Rotkeramik were excavated.

The Renaissance period was characterized by the Huguenot war and the plague. The major epidemics occurred in 1588-1589, 1630 and culminating in the Great Plague of 1721st

The Huguenots infected in 1562, the monastery of the Franciscans in fire and barricaded themselves behind after the city walls of Monteux. They held the city until 1564 and covered only in favor of a ceasefire.

During the French Revolution, only the parish church was looted. During the siege of Carpentras in July 1793, the city served as a rear base for the army of Avignon.

Carpentras develop intensive farming of vegetables and fruit - In modern times could be due to the construction of the Canal de Carpentras and the establishment of the ferry Avignon.

Events

Once a year in Monteux on a locally well-known large-scale fireworks Feu de Monteux organized. 2011 had the fireworks 25,000 paying spectators.
