History

Today the district was until 1803 part of the Markgraftums Bayreuth, then it belonged temporarily to France and came to Bavaria in 1810. In 1804, the district court Pott stone was set up in 1812 followed by the district court districts Bayreuth, Pegnitz and pastures mountain. The seat of the district court Pegnitz was until 1842 in Nennslingen. Bayreuth was already in 1812 become a circular immediate city. The district court districts and Bayreuth belonged initially to the Upper Main District, from 1838 to Upper Franconia.

1862 originated from the regional court districts Pegnitz and Pottenstein the district office Pegnitz and from the regional court districts Bayreuth and Weiden mountain the district office Bayreuth. Both districts have been designated since 1939 as counties.

Bayreuth itself remained acyclic and seat of the enlarged district. By incorporating some of the municipalities of the district of Bayreuth, its territory was increased accordingly.
