Benjamin G. Humphreys II

Benjamin Grubb Humphreys II ( born August 17, 1865 Claiborne County, Mississippi, † October 16, 1923 in Greenville, Mississippi ) was an American politician. Between 1903 and 1923 he represented the third electoral district of the state of Mississippi in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Benjamin Humphreys, the son of Governor Benjamin G. Humphreys, attended the public schools in Lexington, Mississippi, and then studied at the University of Mississippi in Oxford. At that time he was working for some time in the trade. After studying law and his 1891 was admitted to the bar he began in Greenwood to work in his new profession. Between 1892 and 1896 he was also a school board in Leflore County. From 1895 to 1903 he was district attorney for the fourth judicial district of Mississippi. This period was interrupted by his military service during the Spanish-American War, in which he was involved as a lieutenant under the command of General Fitzhugh Lee in Florida.

Humphreys was a member of the Democratic Party as its candidate in 1902 in the third district of Mississippi in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC was chosen. There he took over from the March 4, 1903 Pat Henry. After ten elections he could implement his mandate in Congress until his death on 16 October 1923. Between 1911 and 1913 he was chairman of the committee that dealt with the U.S. territories; 1915 to 1919 he was a member of the committee that dealt with the flood protection.

Benjamin Humphreys was the father of William Y. Humphreys, who was to be his immediate successor in Congress.
