Bordighera

Bordighera is a holiday and beach resort with 10,436 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) in the province of Imperia, region Liguria on the Italian Riviera.

Geography

Bordighera is approximately 10 km from San Remo (in the east ) and the French border ( in the west). The city is divided into two districts, which are separated by the Via Romana: The old town and the newer part of the 19th and 20th centuries. The historic Old Town is located in the east of Bordighera at a 46 m high hill, the Capo San Ampelio (Cape Ampelio ). The New Town stretches along the coast from the Old Town to the Nervia estuary in the west. Bordighera has a special microclimate with milder summers and warmer winters with relatively low humidity.

History

Town History

It is known that as early as the 5th century Ligurian tribes settled on the present area BC. In the year 411 to the hermit Ampelio, who came from Egypt, date palms have been planted here. Culture and sights

Bordighera is described travelers, painters and poets of as a place of exceptional beauty mainly because of its rich Mediterranean vegetation.
