Moonee Valley is located between the Maribyrnong River and Moonee Ponds Creek and is bordered on the southeast by the Melbourne City Centre City. It comprises 16 districts: Aberfeldie, Airport West, Ascot Vale, Avondale Heights, Essendon, Essendon North, Essendon West, Moonee Ponds, Niddrie, Strathmore, Strathmore Heights, Travancore and parts of Flemington, Keilor East, Kensington and North Melbourne. The seat of the City Council is located in Moonee Ponds.

In Essendon is the old airport of the capital, which had been from 1921 to 1970 the main station approach Melbourne before the modern Tullamarine Airport opened only five kilometers away. Freight and smaller passanger continue to use the Essendon Airport.
