Elva, Piedmont
Elva is a municipality with a population of 93 (as at 31 December 2012) in the Italian province of Cuneo, Piedmont.
Geography
Elva is located in a side valley of the Valle Maira, 54 km from the provincial capital of Cuneo. The neighboring municipalities are Prazzo and Stroppo in Valle Maira and Bellino, Casteldelfino and Sampeyre in Valle Varaita.
The territory of the municipality lies between 1,080 m slm and 3064 m s.l.m. above sea level and covers an area of 26.37 km ².
History
The first evidence for the existence of the village date back to Roman times, in the form of a stone in the facade of the church. The name Elva probably refers to the term gene helva or on the trunk of the Galli Helvi, which settled in this area.
Attractions
The parish church ( Chiesa Parocchiale ) has with their choir frescoes one of the greatest art treasures of the western Piedmont. Which arose in the late 15th century works of art are the Dutch painter Hans hiking Clemer attributed.
