Expedition 20

ISS Expedition 20 mission was the designation for the 20 long-term crew of the International Space Station ( ISS). With the arrival of Soyuz TMA -15 on May 29, 2009, ISS Expedition 20 began and the manning of ISS increased from three to six astronauts. Soyuz TMA -15 was permanently docked next Soyuz TMA -14 as second rescue capsule ( for three people) on the ISS. The mission ended on 11 October 2009 with the decoupling of Soyuz TMA- 14th

Team

On 21 November 2008, NASA announced the official crew of ISS Expedition 20 known:

  • Gennady Ivanovich Padalka ( third space flight ), Commander ( Russia / Roscosmos ) ( Soyuz TMA -14)
  • Michael Barratt ( first space flight), flight engineer (USA / NASA) ( Soyuz TMA -14)
  • Frank De Winne ( second space flight), flight engineer (Belgium / ESA ) ( Soyuz TMA -15)
  • Roman Romanenko Jurjewitsch ( first space flight), flight engineer ( Russia / Roscosmos ) ( Soyuz TMA -15)
  • Robert Thirsk ( second space flight), flight engineer ( Canada / CSA) ( Soyuz TMA -15)
  • To July 2009: Koichi Wakata (3rd space flight), flight engineer ( JAXA / Japan) ( STS -119 - STS -127 )
  • July-August 2009: Timothy Kopra ( first space flight), flight engineer (USA / NASA) (STS -127 - STS -128 )
  • August-November 2009: Nicole Stott ( first space flight ), aircraft engineer (USA / NASA) (STS -128 - STS -129 )

Backup crew

The backup crew of ISS Expedition recruited from the backup crews of the Soyuz shuttle respective spaceships ( see there). If everything is going according to plan, these teams two Soyuz missions and thus two ISS expeditions are then usually later for regular use.

Mission History

The Japanese Koichi Wakata already met on 17 March 2009 with STS -119 to the International Space Station, and worked there as a member of the ISS Expedition 18 The two spacemen Padalka and Barratt launched on 26 March 2009 aboard Soyuz TMA -14 and formed together with the Wakata ISS Expedition 19

The ISS Expedition 20 officially began with the arrival of Soyuz TMA -15 on May 29, 2009. Aboard the three astronauts Frank De Winne, Roman Romanenko and Robert Thirsk were Jurjewitsch. From this point on the long-term ISS crew consisted first of six persons.

In preparation for the arrival of Russian Poisk module in November 2009 in June 2009, there were two EVAs, both of which were performed by Gennady Padalka and Michael Barratt. At the first exit on 5 June passive antennas were mounted for the price- docking system at the Zvezda module, wired, and then photographed. The astronauts needed, there are 4 hours and 54 minutes. The second exit took place on 10 June and lasted 12 minutes. Padalka and Barratt away a cover in the docking of the Zvezda module.

In July 2009, Timothy Kopra came with STS -127 aboard the space station and triggered Koichi Wakata from which the shuttle flew back to Earth. In August 2009, the former crew member Timothy Kopra was replaced by Nicole Stott with the Space Shuttle mission STS -128.

The end of the ISS Expedition 20 and thus the beginning of ISS Expedition 21 took place on 11 October 2009, when Padalka and Barratt with the Soyuz TMA -14 returned to Earth. A short time ago were transported by Maxim Surajew and Jeffrey Williams two new crewmembers with Soyuz TMA -16 to the ISS.
