Looking for a low cost production location within the People's Republic of China, Volkswagen AG took on in 1988 negotiations with First Automotive Works, which resulted in a cooperation between the two companies. After almost three years of negotiations, the contracts have been signed in February 1991 based on the Memorandum of Understanding of 1988 and officially announced the establishment of FAW -Volkswagen Automotive. In December 1991, the work could begin with the assembly of CKD kits of the Volkswagen Jetta. The plant in Changchun was designed at this time for a maximum annual capacity of 150,000 units.

With the assembly of the Audi 100 was started in 1992 also on CKD basis. The kits used were obtained from the production of Volkswagen AG and Volkswagen of South Africa.

In late 1993, for the second plant at Changchun work took on. Here the production of gears and motors takes place. The components produced were particularly intended for the supply of the supply network within China. In addition, we had many of the vehicle parts exports because of the temporary overproduction as spare parts to Europe. Finally, after the completion of the construction work at the Changchun assembly plant during the calendar year 1994, you launched the independent production of various automotive parts for the two models of the Audi brand. 1996 finally came Audi 200 long into the model program to do so. Sixty percent of the required components for the new model have come from Chinese production.

With a reorganization of the structures of Asian sales organizations resulted from 1997 to 1998 a redesign of the model ranges in the individual countries of the ASEAN Economic Area. This decision was also based in the From Tokyo Audi Motor Assembly KK, which is why he was transferred the local assembly line after the expansion work on the Chinese plants there and then installed. The maximum annual capacity consequently increased to 220,000 units. Soon the outdated Audi models should then be completely replaced by the A4 and the A6. On the older assembly line thus rolled, only the Jetta from the band, who received a facelift with respect to the revision of the model range and heard from now on the name Jetta King. The new models were well received by the Chinese population. After the sales of the Jetta broke in 2002, the gap with the Bora should be closed again. Its production started in China two years earlier than planned. For him, specially a new plant in Chengdu was built, the work could accommodate 2004. The assembly of the Bora as well as the Jetta have been distributed to both works, with production of the boron remained in Chengdu. The annual capacity of the new plant was 300,000 units. Meanwhile, the new generations of the A4 and the A6 feeder had held. Similarly, the production of the Golf was launched. The capacity of the main work has been meanwhile expanded to 350,000 units. In July 2004, finally launched the pre-production for the Caddy, whose series production, however, was taken in 2005.

A further revision of the model range was made in 2006, after a further plant expansion had begun. It had increased the total capacity to 850,000 units per whole year. Audi drew attention to himself with his new A4 and A6L. Volkswagen, meanwhile, had revised the Bora and offers them in a slightly revised version as Bora Classic, and with a fresh set more advanced design than Bora. Also new was the Sagitar. From 2007 onwards, the New Bora and the Magotan completed the program. Since 2009, there are specially designed for the Chinese market the A4L. The A6L has undergone a facelift. Furthermore, there are since then and the Audi Q5.
