Flag of South Sudan

The flag of South Sudan was originally the flag of the Sudan People's Liberation Army ( SPLA) and was adopted as the flag of the autonomous region of South Sudan, 2005. With independence on 9 July 2011, she was the national flag of South Sudan.

Description and significance

Model of the flag was the national flag of Kenya. According to the official description is:

  • Black for the African population
  • White for peace, which has cost many lives
  • Red for the blood of honorable freedom and justice fighters who lost their lives in the many years of conflict
  • Green for the agricultural potential of the fertile soil and the equatorial vegetation that decorate the Southern Sudan
  • Blue for the Nile River, the main source of life, not just for South Sudan, but also for the north to Egypt
  • The star for the unity of the state of South Sudan.

The flag represents, according to the official announcement, a nation of black Africans, forever united in the struggle for peace and prosperity for all people in South Sudan.

The orientation of the star is mixed. Some flags shows a peak in the corner of the upper leech ( top left of the mast ), with other vertically upwards. At independence celebration a flag has been set with a straight star.

History

The flag has long been at the South Sudan Independence Movement in use, but is now used by all political forces of South Sudan as a symbol of the " nation." In the 1990s, maybe the color of the star was changed from formerly red in today's yellow.

After the transitional constitution of South Sudan from 2007 regulated by a law the appearance of the flag, which is determined by the national government. So that the Constitution follows the terms of the Naivasha Agreement.

After the independence referendum in southern Sudan in 2011 was set as the date of independence July 9, 2011. In the run was disputed whether the flag should be retained or replaced. It was partly criticized as politically neutral, as it is also the flag of the political party SPLA. On 22 March 2011, the South Sudanese Cabinet decided to retain the flag.
