Flag of Gabon
The flag of Gabon was officially launched on 9 August 1960.
Description and significance
Gabon is one of the few countries in the former French colonial territory that did not import the pan-African colors of their flag at the independence. The national flag consists of a horizontal tricolor of green, yellow and blue.
Green stands for the forests of the country, whose wood accounts for a major part of the economy, yellow stands for the sun and the equator, which runs through the land and blue for the country as a seafaring nation.
History
From June 29 1959 to August 9, 1960 was a French colonial flag with the same color pattern as the current national flag (with stripes of different widths ) and the French tricolor in the naval jack in use. From 1960 to 1982, the President of Gabon used a square of Arms Banner of the State Emblem of the country. This was in 1990 replaced by the national flag, which is covered with a white disk with the state coat of arms.
