Foussemagne

Foussemagne ( formerly German Fuchsmeng or Fiessenen ) is a commune in the department of Territoire de Belfort. Administratively it belongs to the district of Belfort and the District of Fontaine. She is also a member of the local association, founded in 1997 Bassin de la Bourbeuse.

Geography

Foussemagne is located on 354 m above sea level, about twelve miles east of the town of Belfort and 20 kilometers west of the Alsatian town of Altkirch (air line). The village is located in the Burgundy gate, on the plateau in the foothills of the Vosges, in the wide valley of the Ruisseau de Saint -Nicolas.

The area of ​​5.1 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the weakly in relief landscape in the Burgundian Gate ( trouée de Belfort ). The central part of the area is traversed in a north-south direction from the valley of the Ruisseau de Saint- Nicolas, which has a width of about two kilometers. The creek drains the area of the Bourbeuse to Allaine. The level in the foothills of the Vosges is on average 360 meters above the sea. It is mostly covered with arable and meadow land, but also shows some forest areas. To the east of the municipality extends to the bottom of the creek Loutre, the partially marked the border to Alsace. In the west, the municipality's area expands in the Grove le Grand Bois. Here the highest elevation of Foussemagne is achieved with 376 m. The accumulated at the forest edge of the Etang Cratsch is one of several lakes in the municipality area and the surrounding area.

Neighboring communities of Foussemagne Fontaine are in the north, Chavannes -sur- l'Étang in the east, Montreux -Vieux in the southeast, Cunelières and Petit- Croix in the southwest and Frais in the northwest.

History

Before the French Revolution the place appeared on maps as Fuchsmeng. First, standing in the sphere of influence of the Lords of Montbeliard, Foussemagne reached the mid 14th century under the suzerainty of the Habsburg dynasty. The village belonged to the rule Montreux, was in possession of Reinach family from 1560.

Together with the Sundgau came Foussemagne due to the Peace of Westphalia in 1648 to the French crown. Since 1793, the village belonged to the Department of Haut -Rhin, however, remained in 1871 as part of the Territoire de Belfort as opposed to the rest of Alsace in France.

From 1871 to 1918 was Foussemagne border town and customs station to the German Reich. On the boundaries of the municipality were six of the 4056 boundary stones of the former German -German border.

Attractions

  • Foussemagne is the only town in France, which has a synagogue but no church. The synagogue was inaugurated in 1865 and served Foussemagne the parishioners until 1940 as a church before it was closed, pillaged and robbed by the German invasion. In 2007, the council decided to buy the building to renovate and set up a museum. The synagogue is classified as a monument historique.
  • The small chapel of St. Anne dates from the 19th century.
  • The 25 m high and 120 m³ summary, today still operating water tower was completed in 1937.
  • Pont d' Arromanches is the name of the bridge over the Ruisseau de Saint -Nicolas on the road to Cunelières. Spanned the existing of a " Whale pier " element bridge after the war in Bourogne the Bourbeuse and in 1952 moved to its present location and renovated in 1997.

Population

With 955 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Foussemagne one of the small communities of the department of Territoire de Belfort. The train station in the southern neighboring Montreux- Vieux is on the railway line between Paris and Mulhouse.
