Francisco León is a municipality in the north of the Mexican state of Chiapas.

In the pre-Hispanic era the place was called Coalpitán, which means prisoners snakes in Nahuatl; to 1934 was the municipality on the name Magdalene Coalpitán. Following the eruption of El Chichón volcano in April 1982, in which the old capital of Francisco León was destroyed, the municipality was evacuated and re-established only in June.

This municipality has about 7,000 inhabitants and an area of 210.8 km ². Administrative headquarters is Carmen Rivera el Viejo (also Viejo Carmen Tonapac ), the largest places of Municipalities, however, San Miguel la Sardina and San José Maspac.

The municipality of Francisco León borders the municipalities Ostuacan, Pichucalco, Chapultenango, Ocotepec, Copainalá and Tecpatán.
