Gais, South Tyrol

Gais is a municipality with 3179 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in South Tyrol (Italy). It is located in Campo Tures near Bruneck.

Geography

The community Gais extends over an area of ​​60.34 km ² in Valle valley, that is in the lower ( southern ) part of the Aurina Valley, and in the surrounding mountains. The Campo Tures branches at Brunico - Gais ' southern neighbor community - heading north from the Pusteria from and is traversed by the River Ahr. The part belonging to Gais section which is adjacent to Campo Tures in the north, is almost planar and provides two village settlements space. History

The community Gais was formed in 1928 by the former individual communities Gais, Ottone, Mühlbach and Tesselberg.

In the Middle Ages included the present-day fractions from Gais to court Ottone, emerged from the 1811 various municipalities, including the municipality of Villa Ottone Ottone with fractions and Gais. Coat of arms

In 1956 was awarded by the Italian Government a coat of arms for the municipality, which had no relation to the place and its history. As a result, it was decided in 1986 by the local council to replace the old coat of arms by a new one. John the Evangelist, whose symbol is the eagle, was the first patron of the municipality Gais. Therefore, the new coat of arms in the right half contains an eagle. The bars in the colors blue - gold - blue are taken from the coat of arms of the former Court of Ottone.
