Honda VF 400 F

The Honda VF 400 F (NC 13) is produced by Honda during the years 1982 to 1986 motorcycle. The bike was never officially available in Germany. The Munich Dealers Motorcycle - Spaett sold the vehicle at a price of 7998 DM The motorcycle was in direct competition to Yamaha RD 350 YPVS.

From the VF 400 F Honda VF 500 F was developed later. Under the designation VF 400 F2 a variant with full fairing was offered.


The Honda has a transverse-mounted V4 engine with 399 cc and a Claw-shift six-speed gearbox. The cylinders have an angle of 90 °. The valve is controlled via double overhead camshafts ( DOHC) and cam followers. The drive of the camshafts to actuate the four valves per cylinder via two tooth chains. These have automatic chain tensioner. The cylinders have a bore of 55 mm, a stroke of 42 mm and a compression ratio of 11:1. The fuel is supplied by four Keihin carburetors. Furthermore, the bike has a non-contact transistor battery ignition, a hydraulically actuated multi-plate clutch, electric starter and an O -ring chain.

Landing gear

The chassis design is based on the double loop bridge frame of steel to the Honda VF 750 F. However, the tubes are round instead of square cross-sections. The left, screw- joist is used as a water supply for the cooling fluid. This makes it possible to save weight and space. The tubes are made from pressed half-shells which are welded together.

The front fork is air-assisted and equipped with a mechanical anti-dive system. The diameter of the inner tubes is 35 mm and 140 mm suspension travel. The rear monoshock is also air-assisted, has a per - link system offers a travel of 108 mm. The rear swingarm is cast from aluminum. The swing arm mount is made by two short bearing bolts. The bike has a wheelbase of 1415 mm, a steering head angle of 63.5 degrees and a lag of 91 mm. The Honda is equipped with sealed, vented, hydraulically actuated single disc with a diameter of 226 mm and floating caliper with twin pistons. The internal ventilation is not very effective, so that it can come to fading under heavy braking load.
