Since 2005, the European headquarters in Offenbach. 1991 Hyundai was in Germany also the first Korean car manufacturers at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt am Main. With the offer of four model series ( Pony, Scoupe, Sonata and Lantra ) the market entry occurs on the German market and thus achieves approximately 2,886 new registrations. In its first full fiscal year 1992 about 28,000 new registrations and 1993 a total of 33 362 new registrations were achieved.

In September 1997, the completion of the work was done at Assan Izmit in Turkey under the leadership of Hyundai Assan Otomotiv.

1998 also South Korean automaker Kia Motors was acquired by Hyundai.

A collaboration with Daimler- Chrysler lasted from 2001 to 2004. Meanwhile, ranging from small cars to luxury limousines product range is not limited to passenger cars, but also includes trucks and buses. HMC is also the largest Korean commercial vehicle manufacturers. Hyundai Motors is now one of the world's seven largest automakers.

In October 2005, the joint venture Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance (GEMA ) was established together with the car manufacturers DaimlerChrysler and Mitsubishi, which manufactures engines for the companies involved.

Hyundai was the official sponsor of the FIFA World Cup 2006 in Germany. According to a study by the University of Hohenheim, the brand benefited from this commitment. Before the World Cup knew only 25 percent of Germans, the Hyundai brand, after the World Cup was 50 percent of a household name. The brand could reach the highest level of awareness among all winning World Cup sponsors.

In April 2006, the company began with the establishment of the Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Czech in Czech Nošovice. The first Hyundai car plant in Europe has started its production in 2009.

The new car factory Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Rus ( HMMR ) On 21 September 2010 at Kamenka industrial estate in Saint Petersburg ( Russia) after three years of construction for approximately 500 million U.S. dollars built. 2011 will produce approximately 105,000 vehicles over 2,400 employees. 2011 should go for the Russian market, the type Hyundai Solaris in series production. The Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Rus ( HMMR ) has thus world seven production outside of Korea: in India, the Czech Republic, Turkey, Russia and the United States.

In March 2011, Hyundai Motor Company has acquired a 34.88 percent stake in Hyundai Engineering & Construction for 4.96 trillion won ( 4.4 billion U.S. dollars).

Development and market position

In order to enter the European market beginning of the 90s foot, followed the Hyundai Motor Company similar to Japanese automakers 20 years before an aggressive pricing policy (combined with a generous standard equipment) to sell the technology to European brands usually inferior models and the European market to gain a foothold. So mainly small cars and small niche models could be brought to the buyer, since in these classes the prestige yet played a subordinate role and plays.

Brought with the introduction of a new generation of models from 2001, the all-new models like the SUV Hyundai Santa Fe, the small car Hyundai Getz, the SUV Hyundai Terracan, the compact MPV Hyundai Matrix and majority efficient successor to the sporty Hyundai Coupe and the middle class car Hyundai Sonata, the vehicles were not only inexpensive, but also reached a - especially compared to the first available on the European market vehicles from Hyundai - remarkable level of quality, although European competitors rather by still favorable prices because by technical highlights in the shadows could provide. Nevertheless presented this model generation a quantum leap forward, especially under safety aspects. So reached both the Santa Fe and the Getz ( the other mentioned models have not been tested by this method ) in the Euro NCAP crash test, four out of five stars. This result holds in particular for the small car Hyundai Getz a good report, because at that time also known competing products with the same period and star number (eg Opel Corsa C, Nissan Micra, Peugeot 206) completed the test.

Remarkable for this period also is the Hyundai Santa Fe, which was a medium-sized SUV for a forward-looking model policy by Hyundai since this vehicle segment despite high oil prices experienced tremendous growth and many representatives of well-known European automobile manufacturers until 2007 ( Opel Antara, Peugeot 4007, Citroen C- Crosser, VW Tiguan ) or 2008 (Renault Koleos, Ford Kuga ) were not yet available.

End of 2004, finally began selling the Hyundai Tucson, who stood together with the new generation of Hyundai Sonata in the first quarter of 2005, for the first time available in a Hyundai ESP and the expansion of passive safety, active front head restraints ( Hyundai Sonata; reduces the risk of whiplash injuries in a rear impact ) and expansion of the air bag equipment with two additional ones, all seat rows comprehensive windowbags ( curtain airbags ) that cover the side windows in the event of a side impact and protect the head of the respective front and rear occupants from injury or those reduce, brought with him. 2006, which for the Football World Cup in Germany, when the Hyundai was on time main sponsor, the new edition of the Hyundai Santa Fe followed (presentation at the Geneva Motor Show ) and the upper class sedan Hyundai Grandeur ( single Hyundai model with eight airbags ), which up to introduction of the SUV Hyundai Veracruz, known in Germany as Hyundai iX55 is ( since early 2009 ), the former head of Hyundai passenger car range in Europe. Indicative of this development is " doing everything - Hyundai " and the change of slogans to " Drive your way ".

As part of this model and technology initiative, the Hyundai Motor Company also invested several billion euros in the development of its own and very modern common - rail diesel engines (developed at the Research Centre of Hyundai in Rüsselsheim, Germany ) with variable turbo blade geometry, which the displacement range of 1.5 l (for the Hyundai Getz and Accent, multiple power levels from 88 hp to 110 hp ), about 1.6 l (for the Hyundai i30, 116 hp ) to 2.0 l (for the Hyundai Sonata, 140PS ) and 2.2 l ( hubraumvergrößerte version of the 2.0 l for the Hyundai Grandeur and the Hyundai Santa Fe, 155 hp) and modernized the petrol engines (1.6 L R4, R4 2.0 l, 2.7 l V6, va variable timing of the camshaft) to include. These newly developed four - cylinder diesel engines are also used in various models of its sister brand Kia. In addition, a newly developed 3.0 - liter V6 diesel engine for the Hyundai Veracruz for the European market planned, which will make 239 hp and thus in a performance class with the Mercedes M-Class (ML 320 CDI), the BMW E70 3.0d, Audi Q7 and VW Touareg 3.0 TDI ranks.

These developments clearly indicate the aim of the Hyundai brand, which make the discounter image behind him and wants to be a serious premium supplier. These efforts are also supported by the fact that Hyundai with the luxury sedan Genesis and their coupe offshoot wants to test in the U.S. as it relates to the market opportunities of a premium brand - as is already the Honda Acura 1984 Toyota Lexus 1989 Nissan Infiniti (also 1989) in front of the eighth - stands. The " means to an end " was in the form of two studies, 2007 - Hyundai Genesis and Hyundai Genesis Coupe - presented by high-tech details such as 6- speed automatic transmission from Aisin Seiki or ZF ( also provides automatic for example, BMW), the first self-developed V8 petrol engine of Hyundai ( Hyundai Genesis) and a 3.8 -liter V6 petrol engine ( Hyundai Genesis Coupe) shine with 306 hp. On January 8, 2008 ( the number 8 is perhaps no coincidence and good luck ) presented the Hyundai Motor Company, the production version of the Hyundai Genesis in South Korea. It should replace the outdated years Hyundai Centennial and develop mainly on the U.S. market at a serious competitor for German premium providers such as Audi, BMW and Mercedes or the above-mentioned Japanese luxury brands, as Hyundai Genesis cheaper and will offer better equipped and he can keep up technically. In tests of U.S. journals, the Genesis sedan cuts from excellent (eg in the test of the magazine Consumer Reports with 92 points out of 100 ). In addition, Hyundai showed at the New York International Auto Show in March 2008, the production version of the Hyundai Genesis Coupe, which is primarily compete against the Infiniti G37.

Due to the fact that Hyundai was able to present in Europe only a few products in the year 2007, the brand lost market share. May have played in this development also compared with previous models higher prices of cars, which therefore could no longer be sold only on price. During 2008, sales remained about the same, Hyundai increased sales against the industry trend in early 2009. This is mainly due to the scrappage scheme in Germany. Since all small models of car brand (up to compact class ) not more than two years on the market or have just been introduced only ( Hyundai i20 ) and just those categories of vehicles ( small cars, small cars and compact cars ) thanks to the premium experienced a huge boom, could the define brand. So Hyundai sold in February 2009 810 per cent more than in the same month last year i30. Sales of the Hyundai i10 increased by over 350 percent.

Since July 2009, in Korea the semi- hybrid model Elantra LPI Hybrid, in which an electric drive supports a natural gas- powered gasoline engine sold.

In one carried out in 2010 in Germany representative written survey on quality and reliability ( Auto Bild Quality Report ), created by the Association for Consumer Research ( GfK) on behalf of the specialist magazine Auto Bild, was based on 9,278 interviews with motorists Hyundai ranked 1st place 2 for Honda. 3rd place for Audi, Mazda and Toyota.

In 2011, Hyundai was again winner of the Auto Bild Quality Report. In behalf of the motoring magazine Auto image re- conducted representative questionnaire survey of GfK on quality and reliability based on 8,610 interviews with motorists Hyundai scored the 1st place in a row. In 2nd place, the Japanese automaker Honda, Mazda and Toyota and 5th place followed by the Czech car manufacturer Škoda.
