Ice hockey at the 1984 Winter Olympics

The 1984 Winter Olympics were held in Yugoslavia in Sarajevo. The Olympic hockey tournament was held here during the period from February 7 to 19. Twelve teams participated in this tournament.

Were eligible to participate hosts Yugoslavia, the eight teams in the A- group of the Ice Hockey World Championship in 1983, and the two best teams in the B group. Since the GDR her start right not perceived as sixth -placed the A-WC, Austria was declared the B- group of third parties. The last station was played in a qualification between the B- Group third parties and the C- group winners. For Austria - after the abandonment of the GDR already qualified directly as B- Group third parties - took Norway as B- group at the fourth excretion in part.

The competition format was not changed compared to the previous Olympic tournament, except that additionally a game has been played for seventh place this year.

In contrast to this 1980 Olympic ice hockey tournament did not yield any big surprises. The reigning World Champion from the USSR took the sixth time the gold medal and moved so that the number of Olympic medals with the previous record holder equal to Canada. Disappointing was the cutting of the defending champion United States.

Qualification
