Jonathan Freeman (representative)

Jonathan Freeman ( born March 21, 1745 in Mansfield, Connecticut; † August 20, 1808 in Hanover, New Hampshire ) was an American politician. Between 1797 and 1801, he represented the State of New Hampshire in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Jonathan Freeman was the uncle of Nathaniel Freeman (1766-1800), who was from 1795 to 1799 for the state of Massachusetts in Congress. He attended the public schools of his home and moved in 1769 to Hanover, New Hampshire, where he was engaged in farming. In his new hometown, he was town clerk and justice of the peace. Between 1789 and 1797 he was also the local council.

Freeman was a member of the Federalist Party. Between 1787 and 1789 he was a member of the House of Representatives of New Hampshire; 1789 to 1794 he was a member of the State Senate. In 1791, Freeman was a delegate to a meeting to revise the State Constitution. He also became a member of the State Council (State Council). Since 1793 until his death in 1808, he was Head ( Overseer ) at Dartmouth College. At this university, he also managed the finances for over 40 years.

In the congressional elections of 1796, which were held all across the state, Freeman has been selected for the second parliamentary seat from New Hampshire in the U.S. House of Representatives. There he entered on March 4, 1797, the successor of Nicholas Gilman. After a re-election in 1798 he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1801 two legislative sessions. He then worked again in agriculture. Jonathan Freeman died on August 20, 1808 in Hanover and was also buried there.
