George B. Upham

George Baxter Upham (* December 27, 1768 in Brookfield, Worcester County, Massachusetts, † February 10, 1848 in Claremont, New Hampshire ) was an American politician. Between 1801 and 1803 he represented the State of New Hampshire in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

George Upham was the younger brother of Jabez Upham (1764-1811), who represented 1807-1810 the state of Massachusetts in Congress. He was also a cousin of Charles Wentworth Upham (1802-1875), who was sitting 1853-1855 for Massachusetts in Congress. George Upham attended the common schools and Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter. Then he studied until 1789 at Harvard University. After a subsequent study of law and its made ​​in 1792 admitted to the bar, he began practicing in his new profession in Claremont.

Politically, Upham member of the Federalist Party. Between 1796 and 1804 he was District Attorney in Cheshire County. In the congressional elections of 1800, which were held all across the state, Upham was elected for the first parliamentary seat from New Hampshire in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington. This he stepped on 4 March 1801. Since he resigned in 1802 to further candidacy, he was able to complete only one term in Congress until March 3, 1803.

In the years 1804-1813, and in 1815 he was a member of the House of Representatives from New Hampshire. 1809 and 1815 he was president of the chamber, respectively. In 1814, he also belonged to the Senate from New Hampshire. After that he worked as a lawyer again. Upham still rose also in the banking business. He died on 10 February 1848 in Claremont.
