Moses Norris, Jr.

Moses Norris, Jr. ( born November 8, 1799 in Pittsfield, Merrimack County, New Hampshire; † January 11, 1855 in Washington DC ) was an American politician (Democratic Party). He represented the State of New Hampshire in both chambers of Congress.

After attending the public schools and the Pittsfield Academy, a private school, graduated Norris 1828 at Dartmouth College. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1832 and practiced law in Barnstead. In 1834 he returned to his hometown.

1837 Norris became politically active for the first time. He was elected to the House of Representatives from New Hampshire, where he remained until 1840. In 1842 he spent a further session. From 1841 to 1842 he was a member of the Executive Council, the executive body of the State of New Hampshire.

On March 4, 1843 Moses Norris Democrat member of the U.S. House of Representatives, where he remained for a re-election to March 3, 1847. From 1847 to 1848 he was Speaker of the House of Representatives from New Hampshire, before he was elected to the U.S. Senate, where he took his seat on March 4, 1849. There he was, among others, Chairman of the Committee on Claims. Shortly before the end of his six-year tenure, he died in January 1855 in Washington. He was buried in his hometown of Pittsfield.
