La Roque-sur-Cèze

La Roque- sur -Cèze is a commune with 174 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the department of Gard in the Languedoc- Roussillon region. It belongs to the district Nîmes and the canton of Bagnols -sur -Cèze. La Roque- sur -Cèze is classified since 2007 as one of the plus beaux villages de France ( most beautiful villages in France ).

Geography

The small medieval village was built on a rocky outcrop of limestone and perched above the river Céze at the bottom of the Gorges -de- Céze. In the immediate vicinity are the cascades of Sautadet. The town of Bagnols -sur -Cèze located 8 km east- south-east and by Orange in Provence there are in the same direction about 25 km ( straight line ). However, a direct connection to Orange does not exist.

Attractions

  • The castle from the 12th century. It was burned by the Huguenots in 1573 and abandoned in the 19th century. Today it is privately owned and can not be viewed from the inside.
  • The Romanesque chapel from the 11th century.
  • The ruined fortress walls are still visible here and there.
  • A medieval stone bridge
  • The cascade of Sautadet ( waterfalls)
