M151 MUTT

Ford M151 MUTT is an American military base car series. It replaced the U.S. army from 1959 to become known during World War II Willys MB, as well as its successor model M38. The acronym MUTT stands for Military Utility Tactical Truck.

History of development

Although the Ford M151 its predecessors is very similar externally, it is nevertheless a newly developed vehicle. Unlike his predecessors, he has no ladder frame with rigid axles / leaf springs and attached car body, but a self-supporting body with independent suspension and coil springs.

General referred only to all vehicles with Willys- origin as Jeep, Ford MUTT is not recognized as a Jeep.

The Ford MUTT (internal designation of the U.S. armed forces: M151 Series) was delivered in the years 1964 to 1976 to about 100,000 units for various armies, the greatest part was the U.S. Army. The M151 were procured as a replacement for the M38 Willys jeeps and for the Willys MB Jeep from World War II.

The original M151 was for inexperienced drivers during fast cornering a security risk, especially with no load on the rear axle. The M151 A2 received a trailing link axle, which alleviated the problem in addition a number of vehicles were equipped with roll cages. However, the U.S. Department of Defense recognized the vehicle as unsuitable for civilian use and high speeds. From 1973, therefore the chassis of all decommissioned M151 were destroyed - even countries that received M151 on military aid, followed this form of demilitarization. The remaining intact components such as the engine and transmission were installed by some companies in new chassis, significant production figures but never reached.

The Army was to participate in a training film showing the "Jeep dangers " duty before you could move these vehicles. The questionable handling characteristics prompted the U.S. Army to the M151 gradually phase out as part of their renewal program and replace it with the new Humvee.

Today it is found sporadically in some armies, such as in Israel. The U.S. Army has, for reasons of tradition Care for some M151 in their inventory.
