The largest wine places by vineyards are Piesport, Zell ( Mosel), Leiwen that Konz valley, Neumagen -Dhron, Mehring, Bernkastel -Kues and kick home.

General

The region is one of the oldest Roman cities in Germany, Trier (Augusta Treverorum ), the oldest wine village in Germany, Neumagen, with the Roman Neumagener wine vessel and the oldest mill north of the Alps, the Karlsmühle Roman origin at Mertes village.

The region is the largest steep vineyards area in the world, with more than 5,300 hectares, the largest Riesling acreage worldwide dar. in the region in 2012 and 669 125 hectoliters of wine produced. The steepest vineyard in the world is the Bremmer Calmont with a slope of about 65 degrees. In many cases, still dominated the well-known since Roman times single pile education or Mosel pile education, but is gradually being replaced by modern wire systems in steep slope. The floors are made in the wine region Mosel slate (Saar, Ruwer, middle and lower Mosel) and limestone ( Upper Moselle ). In 1967 the wine brotherhood Mosel -Saar -Ruwer.

The area labeled " Mosel -Saar- Ruwer " was the first time the wine law of 1909. A wine labeling with " Mosel -Saar- Ruwer " was from 1936. Anyone who buys a wine of the Mosel -Saar- Ruwer region from autumn 2007, is on the label only find " Mosel ." The federal cabinet decided on August 9, 2006 in Berlin a corresponding change of the Wine Law. " This is the wish of the winemakers from the region ," said Vice - government spokesman Thomas Steg in Berlin. The term " Mosel " could prevail in his view better internationally.

In the production area is partly the Bernkasteler Doctor who is among the most expensive agricultural land in Germany. The Bernkasteler ring eV (founded 1899) and the Great Ring VDP Mosel -Saar- Ruwer Association ( founded in 1908 ) regularly hold wine auctions.

Top quality in the category of quality wine can reach prices of several hundred euro per 0.75 liter bottle at auction. Proportionally large, however, are in the category of " quality wine " bottled for consumption in the lower price segments ( 106,300 hl: 705,000 hl). Wines from the Moselle are viewed by the general public rather than fruity, sweet and low alcohol content. From audited in 2010, with " Mosel " declared around 860,000 hectoliters of wine were approximately 580,000 hl in the flavor sweet and sweet expanded ( approximately 160,000 dry, approximately 120,000 semi-dry ).

In 1868, the Saar and Moselle wine- card for the Region of Trier was commissioned by the Royal Government of Trier, under the direction of the royal land Inspectors steuerrath Clotten. In 1897 a Mosel wine- map for the district Coblenz. These maps show a classification of vineyards in three categories, which followed a classification value, taking into account land prices and income revenue in the 19th century. She was to highlight any mapping to quality levels of wine, but was used in the measurement basis for tax assessment. The Association of German VDP used this company's creditworthiness to make call from 2002, its members wines from a position of the first category called Great Growth. Mosel wine bottles with the glass embossed characters " 1L " ( first layer ) are among the highest quality and price level. Precursor of this classification was adopted in 1802 in France Classification des Vignes, which was applied in the left-bank wine regions. With the caveat " ... that the area with the greatest harvest is not automatically the best ", vineyard plots could be classified into one of three categories, with variety growth, processing and revenues were taken as criteria. The financial management of the Prussian Rhine province took over after 1815 largely this tax assessment system. The took place until the mid-19th century land survey with binding land showed all stocked areas and - in different colors - each category of location quality or value of the land.
