Paul Manning (cyclist)

Paul Manning MBE ( born November 6, 1974 in Stockport ) is a British cycling coach and former racing cyclist.

Cycling career

Manning won in 1996 on the road time trial Duo Normand. The following year he won the time trial of the Tour of Sweden itself. His first major success was the overall win in the Milk Race in 2001 and two months later a stage win in the Tour of Saxony. In 2002, he also won a stage at the Milk Race and a year later at the Herald Sun Tour. 2005 Manning drove for the British Continental team Recycling.co.uk and since 2006 he is at the Belgian Professional Continental team Landbouwkrediet - Colnago under contract.

On the railway Manning is more successful than on the road. His first silver medal he won at the track - Cycling World Championships 2000 in the Team Pursuit. Later at the Olympic Games in Sydney, the British National Équipe secured the bronze medal. Until the next games he was with the national team in the Team Pursuit three times second and one third place at the World Championships.

In Athens, the British defeated by the Australians in the final and secured the silver medal. In the first year after the Olympics, he then managed for the first time to win the world title. In the subsequent World Championships in Bordeaux, he was the fifth time World Cup champions and landed with his third place for the first time a medal in the individual pursuit. At the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, he even won the gold medal in the individual pursuit and to a second gold in the team competition. This success drove Manning, among others, with Bradley Wiggins, Chris Newton, Steve Cummings, Rob Hayles, Bryan Steel and Geraint Thomas.

2008 Paul Manning won at the Olympic Games in Beijing, together with Ed Clancy, Bradley Wiggins and Geraint Thomas the gold medal in the team pursuit, after the quartet had previously already become World Champion. In both competitions, the British foursome won with a new world record time.

After the Olympics, Manning announced his retirement from cycling. In 2009 he was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire ( MBE). In December 2010, Manning was inducted into the British Cycling Hall of Fame.

Work as a trainer

After his resignation, Paul Manning was a member of the coaching staff of British Cycling and looked after the women in endurance. Under his aegis, the British women's team won the team pursuit gold medal at the Olympic Games 2012 in London and presented six times a new world record. In 2012 he was awarded in the UK as Coach of the Year.
