Saint-Dizier-l'Évêque

Saint- Dizier- l'Évêque ( formerly German Sankt Störingen ) is a municipality in the canton of French Beaucourt Territory Territoire de Belfort, Franche-Comté region. The name is derived from the Holy Bishop Desiderius Rhodonensis, who was buried in the village church.

Geography

Saint- Dizier- l'Évêque lies in the southernmost part of the department of Territoire de Belfort on a plateau, which geologically belongs to the Jura. The municipality lies at an altitude 374-615 m and counts 416 inhabitants (1 January 2011). The 10.83 km ² municipal area is east of the village of a valley (Val Saint- Dizier ) broken. The municipality borders on the following neighboring communities: Fêche -l'Église, Lebetain, Villars -le- Sec, Croix, Montbouton, Beaucourt Badevel and Buix to Switzerland.

History

Traces indicate a settlement already in the Neolithic period. As early as the 7th century, during the lifetime of Bishop Desiderius, stood a chapel or an oratory in the church today. In the Middle Ages until the 19th century, the village was a regionally important place of pilgrimage. Until 1937 the church was called Saint- Dizier, then with suffix Saint -Dizier -l'Évêque.

Attractions

The village church was built in the 11th century in the Romanesque style and consecrated in 1041. The bell tower was rebuilt in 1575 in Gothic style and 1875 increased. In a side room of the church is the grave stone of St. Desiderius, in the crypt of the sarcophagus, both dating from the 7th century. In the Val Saint- Dizier still be remains of the ancient pilgrims bathrooms.
