Toralf Engan

Toralf Engan ( born October 1, 1936 in Hølonda, Melhus municipality ) is a former Norwegian ski jumper.

Making his first appearance in an international tournament he had in 1956 at the Four Hills Tournament in Innsbruck Bergisel. For the Olympic Winter Games in 1960 in Squaw Valley, he was not nominated, but after this disappointment began for him a time of great success. When Holmenkollen jumping in 1960, he finished second behind Olympic champion Helmut Recknagel, 1962 he won there. In 1961-63 he won three times in a row jumping the Swedish Skifestspiele, 1961, he was named Norwegian national champion.

In the Nordic World Ski Championships 1962 in Zakopane he was ski jumping world champion. In the same year Engan received the Holmenkollen medal that Morgenbladet gold medal and was named Norway's athlete of the year. In 1963 he won after three wins in Oberstdorf, Innsbruck and Partenkirchen and a fourth place in Bischofshofen Rating Four Hills Tournament.

At the Olympic Winter Games in 1964 he delivered at two competitions in a duel with the Finn Veikko Kankkonen. The first event was the first competition of a large hill, which was played at the Olympics. However, it was not at Bergisel, Engans favorite hill, instead of, but in Seefeld. Nevertheless Engan won here a very narrow victory against Kankkonen. When jumping on the Bergiseler normal hill, the conditions turned around, Engan won silver behind Kankkonen. The following year Engan again reached in Innsbruck eighth place in the Hills-Tournament, after the winter, he finished his career as an active athlete; 1967-1969 he was the coach of the Norwegian ski jumping team.
