Westland (municipality), Netherlands
( Listen? / I ) Westland is the name of a region and a municipality in the Netherlands, South Holland province. The municipality has 102 717 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013).
Places
The area between The Hague, Vlaardingen, Delft, Hoek van Holland and the North Sea is, from time immemorial, Westland. When merged the smaller communities of the region, they chose this name for the fusion community. Also, the eastern neighbor Midden- Delfland is a fusion community in the West Country.
In the municipality of Westland are several towns: Honselersdijk, 's- Gravenzande, De Lier, Kwintsheul Maasdijk, monsters, Naaldwijk, Poeldijk, Ter Heijde and Water rings; plus a number of smaller towns.
Location and economic
Westland with his ( after Torfabtragung the 18th/19th c.) Incurred, fertile soil ( a mixture of sand and clay ) also glazen De Stad (the " Glass City " ) is called. It is the largest greenhouse culture area in the Netherlands, where the often criticized tomatoes and peppers from the Netherlands, but also a lot of flowers and ornamental plants are grown.

The products from the greenhouses will be auctioned on site: Flowers in Honselersdijk, vegetables and fruits in Poeldijk and De Lier. Everything is about the organization FloraHolland based, among other things in Bleiswijk and Venlo.
The coastal strip knows a modest beach tourism.
History
Before Ter Heijde a fierce naval battle between the fleets of England and Holland took place on August 10, 1653. The Dutch, under the command of Michiel de Ruyter, managed to escape from a sticky situation, but another naval hero, Maarten H. Tromp, lost his life (10 August 1653). In 2003, the Tromp festival was held there to commemorate his death.
The municipality of Westland was formed by the merger of five previously independent cities and towns until January 1, 2004.
Attractions
In Honselersdijk there is a large flower auction building ( Flora Holland ) and the Westlands Museum, which provides an overview of the history of horticulture. De Lier has a church dating from the 15th - 19th Century with a leaning tower and a fruit and vegetable auction. Also, monsters, and Poeldijk 't Woudt ( direction Delft) have one dating from the 15th or 16th century church.
