Many (Moselle)

Many ( German Niederum ) is a commune with 264 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Moselle in the Lorraine region.

Geography

The municipality Many lies about 30 kilometers southeast of Metz and seven kilometers southwest of Faulquemont.

History

The village was in the Middle Ages in the German speaking region and was first mentioned in 1180 as Manheim, ( 1186: Niderheim, 1267: Nidrehem ), but now frankophon for centuries. North leads past an old Roman road, to the south lie the remains of the discontinued around 1580 village Marcourt.

Many belongs since 1766 to France. 1871-1918 it was again temporarily to the German Empire, but French remained the official and vernacular.
