Vittoncourt

Vittoncourt ( Lorraine Vitonco or Utonco ) is located on the French Nied a commune with 395 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the department of Moselle in the Lorraine region, about 23 kilometers east of Metz.

In the village there were 1126 to 1603 a Benedictine monastery, whose remains were destroyed in the Thirty Years' War.

Vittoncourt belongs since 1769 to France. 1871-1918 it was again temporarily to the German Empire, but French remained the official and vernacular.

1915-18 the German authorities granted the municipality the invented name Wittenhofen, during the Nazi occupation ( 1940-44 ) then Wittenhofen on the Nied.
