Merten

Merten is a commune with 1547 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Moselle in the Lorraine region. It belongs to the district Boulay -Moselle and the Canton Bouzonville.

Geography

The community Merten bordered to the north and east to Saarland, the Have forms the eastern boundary of the municipality. Neighboring town on the German side is Bisten in the community about the Lord.

History

As well as the surrounding villages belonged Merten to 1751 the German Bellistum the Duchy of Lorraine. When, after the French Revolution, the provinces of the Ancien Régime were dissolved, the region came to the Moselle department. After Napoleon's defeat came Merten - like its neighbor Bisten - Prussian Kreis Saarlouis.

In a report drawn up on 11 June in 1827 and on October 23, 1829, signed in Saarbrücken agreement between the kingdoms of France and Prussia there was a marginal adjustment in the Merten became French again.

Attractions

At Christmas time every year, the choir of the Church of Merten transformed into a giant nativity scene, which attracts many visitors. Lighting, music and moving scenes can be switched on by inserting coins.
